LISBON: Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 23-year career with Portugal. The 41-year-old forward said he would hand over the national team's iconic number seven shirt to the next generation after the November international break.

Ronaldo announced his decision in an emotional video shared on social media on Thursday. Reflecting on his journey since making his senior debut in August 2003, he described representing Portugal as the greatest privilege of his career.

"Today the time has come to give it to the future," Ronaldo said, referring to the number seven shirt he has worn for 23 years.

He leaves international football as the men's game's all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.

Ronaldo's international career included Portugal's historic triumph at Euro 2016 and two UEFA Nations League titles. He also represented the country at six World Cups and five European Championships.

In his farewell message, Ronaldo reflected on the victories and defeats of his career, saying he had never stopped feeling proud of representing Portugal. He thanked his teammates, coaches, support staff and family for being part of the journey.

"Today I finish my walk on the pitch with the national team; I leave with my head held high, with pride in the path I took, and with the awareness that I gave everything I had for Portugal," he said.

His announcement comes weeks after reports of tensions with Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus following his departure from the national team's camp in September. Ronaldo had subsequently clarified that he was not retiring and remained available for selection.

The decision now marks the end of his international career, although he said he would continue to support Portugal. His legacy includes setting records for international goals and appearances that have placed him among the most decorated players in the history of the game.
