Football took the back seat in 2015 as a massive corruption scandal stunned world football and resulted in eight year bans for FIFA and UEFA presidents Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini respectively. In an early morning raid at a Swiss Hotel, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) officials arrested members of FIFA, for alleged corruption and other financial frauds. Besides, the awarding of 2006 World Cup to Germany, 2010 WC to South Africa, 2018 WC to Russia and 2022 WC to Qatar are also being investigated by either FBI or internal governments. As part of it, fourteen people were indicted in May by FBI for wire fraud, racketeering, and money laundering. The arrested included former CONCACAF executive Chuck Blazer and former FIFA Vice-President Jack Warner. Blazer and Warner were suspended from FIFA later. Despite the arrests, FIFA presidential election did go through and Blatter won. However, four days later, he announced his resignation, but stated his intention to continue until the new boss is appointed. But soon after criminal proceedings were opened against Blatter over an unaccounted two million Swiss Francs payment to Platini in 2011 for work carried out between 1999-2002. This past week, FIFA’s Ethics Committee banned the duo for eight years.
