The Congress in Kerala on Sunday aired objection to the reported plan of the Centre to appoint the former Chief Justice of India, Justice P Sathasivam, as the State’s Governor. State Congress president VM Sudheeran said it was inappropriate to appoint a former Chief Justice as Governor of a State.

“It is the Chief Justice who administers the oath of office to the President of India. There is need for serious examination of whether it is appropriate to appoint a person who has occupied such an esteemed position in a Governor’s post. Personally, I don’t think it is appropriate,” Sudheeran said in Thiruvananthapuram.

Some noted lawyers of the Kerala High Court also have come out against the reported Central plan to appoint Justice Sathasivam as Kerala’s next Governor. Allegations have come up to the effect that there is pressure from Tamil Nadu Chief Justice J Jayalalithaa behind the Centre’s reported proposal.

Serious concerns are being raised from certain quarters in Kerala about what position a person like Justice Sathasivam adopt while functioning as Kerala Governor on vexed issues between the State and Tamil Nadu like that of the Mullaperiyar dam.
