'Closer scrutiny' of IPl teams' finances

The newly-elected BCCI vice-president and IPl governing council member T C Mathew on Tuesday said there will be a “closer scrutiny” of financial transactions of IPl teams’ promoters to make the “world’s biggest cricket event” a transparent affair.

“We give approval only after closer scrutiny of share transfer. Who is investing more in a (IPl) team... How is its share transfer... All these factors will be taken taken into consideration,” Mathew told a meet the press programme organised by the Ernakulam Press Club here.

Responding to queries on spot fixing allegations that have hit the glory of the IPl, Mathew said “IPl will be corruption-free, fixing-free, betting-free. There’s no doubt in that. We’ve to restore the glory of the IPl. It is the biggest event happening in world cricket.”

Mathew said, he as the vice-president of the BCCI, will provide all support to S Sreesanth, if he is exonerated by the court in the spot-fixing scam. “A trial is going on in a Delhi court. I hope that he (Sreesanth) will be exonerated and make a come back”, he said.

“If he (Sreesanth) is exonerated by the court, he can make a come back to the field of cricket... And we, the Kerala Cricket Association and as a vice-president of the BCCI, I will provide him all support,” Mathew said.

Players received 38cr less in 2013-14

Mumbai: Income distribution to the players from the Cricket Board’s coffers has taken a steep dip of Rs38 crore in 2013-14 as compared to the previous fiscal because of a corresponding decrease in income from media rights. “In the year under consideration, the expenses on cricketing operations went down marginally from Rs551 crore last year to Rs516 crore in the current year. The provision for gross revenue share payable to the players has gone down from Rs49 crore to Rs11 crores in the current year. This is because of the lesser media rights income,” BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry has said in the 2013-14 annual report.

According to Chaudhry, “The gross media rights income had gone down substantially from Rs774 crore last year to Rs419 crore in the current year. This is mainly because of lesser number of International matches at home.”

The Board’s annual gross receipts for the year ended March 31, 2014 from international tours were Rs193 crore as against Rs216 crore the previous year.

In contrast, gross receipts from the Indian Premier league (IPl) have jumped to Rs1,194 crore in 2013-14 agianst Rs892 crore last year.

Biswal to remain IPl chairman

New Delhi: Odisha Cricket Association president Ranjib Biswal will retain his position as the chairman of the IPl in the new regime under Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Although none of the sub-committees has been announced, it has been reliably learnt that there won’t be any change in the IPl hierarchy with Biswal being at the helm of affairs. “The east zone units need to stick together. Since Ranjib had supported Mr Dalmiya’s bid of becoming the president, we will support his retention as the IPl chairman,” a senior BCCI official said on Tuesday.

While Biswal’s re-appointment is on cards, CAB treasurer Biswarup Dey was on Monday appointed ‘Executive Assistant’ to president Dalmiya and will now act as a bridge between new president and former president N Srinivasan. “Dey has been a Dalmiya confidant for long but even Srinivasan likes him a lot.”
