BEST OF THE REST: IPl 8 REVIEW

Published on:

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

Finished: 1st

What worked: CSK squad comprises of international level players and it showed in their consistency which has been their boon throughout IPl history.

What didn't: Upon losing Brendon McCullum for the play-offs, CSK's attack looked deplete and it showed in Qualifier 1 and the Final.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Finished: 3rd

What Worked: Despite the likes of Gayle, De Villiers and Kohli the team could not get off to a good start and lost games in the beginning. However, the tables turned with the arrival of Mitchell Starc who brought back the confidence but also led the bowling attack upfront. Young guns like Mandeep Singh and Sarfraz Khan played their part when the top order failed. Yuzvendra Chahal picked 23 wickets in this season.

What didn’t: Dinesh Karthik who was bought for 11 crores failed to make an impression and was a major setback.

Rajasthan Royals

Finished: 4th.

What Worked: Ajinkya Rahane is surely the player of the season for RR. Their batting order looked very flexible throughout the tournament. The purchase of Chris Morris helped them in their bowling attack.

What didn't: James Faulkner couldn't reciprocate the WC 2015 magic in IPl.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Finished: 5th.

What Worked: Andre Russell’s batting and bowling was a surprise. Seeing him hitting the ball into stands, knocking down the wickets was a delight to watch. He was also voted MVP.

What didn't: The batting order seemed desolate of international superstars. Sunil Narine wasn't as big a factor for KKR as last time. A lot of questions were raised on their fielding too.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Finished: 6th.

What Worked: Undoubtedly their captain David Warner who was in fine touch with his bat after he had a great run in the 2015 WC. Shikhar Dhawan was also in fine form. Both the openers provided some solid start at times for the team. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was again the pick of the bowlers and the only consistent bowler in the pace attack.

What didn't:  lack of Indian batting talent was a big reason of worry.  Kane Williamson was limited to just two games.

DElHI DAREDEVIlS

Finished: 7th

What worked: The team found out some positives for the next season which is Shreyas Iyer and Kedar Jadhav performing well and the return of the left arm pacer Zaheer Khan. Imran Tahir came in as a surprise.

What didn’t: DD failed majorly in the batting department. Yuvraj Singh, who was the costliest buy failed to prove his worth.

Kings XI Punjab

Finished: 8th

What worked: In a season which produced only three wins, it is tough to find positives. However, individually David Miller struck well for the side (357 runs) and three bowlers — Anureet Singh (15 wickets), Sandeep Sharma (13 wickets) and Axar Patel (13 wickets) stood out.

What didn't: Pretty much everything. Relying heavily on Glenn Maxwell in terms of bat and Mitchell Johnson in the bowling department didn't go as planned.
