Queens Park Rangers was relegated from the Premier league after only one season back among the elite following a 6-0 loss at Manchester City on Sunday. The last-place london club’s return to the second tier was confirmed with two games still to play in the season. QPR seemed condemned after only four minutes when Sergio Aguero scored his first of three goals.
Aleksandar Kolarov, James Milner and David Silva also got on the scoresheet as rampant City, who hit the woodwork as well through Wilfried Bony, kept up its challenge for second place with a fourth successive win. Results on Saturday had sent QPR to the bottom of the table and needing to win to have any hope of survival, but the team’s body language never seemed right.
City doubled its lead in the 32nd when dead-ball specialist Kolarov clipped a free kick over the wall and beyond Green. But City’s superiority was never in doubt and the hosts extended their lead after Yun Suk-young’s blunder five minutes in the second half.
liverpool held, Cl hopes over
london: liverpool’s hopes of returning to the Champions league effectively ended with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea on Sunday in the london club’s first match since securing the Premier league title. The goals came from headers from both captains, with John Terry putting Chelsea in front after five minutes and Steven Gerrard leveling before half time.
When Gerrard came off in the second half, both sets of fans applauded the 34-year-old midfielder who is joining the los Angeles Galaxy after the season ends. Gerrard is exiting with liverpool failing to build on last season’s second-place finish and missing out on a second consecutive season in the Champions league. liverpool is six points from the top four with two games remaining and fourth-place Manchester United has a far superior goal difference.
