Man City thrash Spurs, Arsenal pull off draw against Hull, Chelsea win, Southampton pummel Sunderland 8-0
Sergio Aguero scored four goals in a dazzling display to lead Manchester City to a 4-1 win over Tottenham on Saturday in an entertaining Premier league game that featured four penalties and a red card.
City made it 15 goals against Spurs in their last three meetings thanks to Aguero, who scored twice in each half to take his league tally this season to nine goals in eight games. He also had a first-half penalty saved.
Aguero opened in the 13th minute and restored City’s lead from the penalty spot in the 20th after Christian Eriksen had equalized.
City goalkeeper Joe Hart saved a penalty from Roberto Soldado in the 62nd before Aguero scored in the 68th — from the spot after Federico Fazio was red-carded - and the 75th.
Arsenal grab late points
Danny Welbeck scored a stoppage-time equaliser as injury-hit Arsenal fought back to draw 2-2 against Hull in the Premier league on Saturday. The Gunners, with a makeshift defense and missing the injured Mesut Ozil, took an early lead through Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates Stadium.
Mid-table Hull hit back with an equalizer from Mohamed Diame, as Arsenal claimed a foul in the build-up, and then took the lead right after the start of the second half through Abel Hernandez.
Arsenal, which lost Jack Wilshere to what could prove to be another ankle problem, looked to have been frustrated before Welbeck scored in the first of six minutes of added time.
The hosts almost snatched it at the death through Kieran Gibbs, who was denied by stand-in Hull goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic.
Chelsea extend lead
Chelsea maintained its five-point lead at the top of the Premier league on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Both teams were reduced to 10 men in a dramatic end to the first half that had earlier seen Oscar open the scoring.
The Brazilian midfielder put the visitors ahead with an exquisite free kick in the sixth minute from 30 yards out.
Referee Craig Pawson dismissed Chelsea fullback Cesar Azpilicueta in the 40th for a two-footed challenge on Mile Jedinak and within a minute he gave Palace defender Damien Delaney his second booking after he brought down loic Remy.
Cesc Fabregas added the second in the 51st - his first league goal in Chelsea colors before Frazier Campbell netted a 90th minute consolation.
Southampton run riot
Southampton humiliated Sunderland 8-0 on Saturday for its biggest Premier league victory ever and it’s most impressive display so far in its surprisingly strong start to the season.
Sunderland’s Santiago Vergini set the tone for the visitors with a spectacular own goal in the 12th minute, and it only got worse from there. Graziano Pelle and Jack Cork made it 3-0 by halftime, and Sunderland then conceded four more in a 16-minute span in the second half, including another own goal by liam Bridcutt and a second by Pelle.
“I think it’s probably the most embarrassing time I’ve had on a football pitch,” Sunderland manager Gus Poyet said. “I’m really sorry for the fans. ... They had to look at a very difficult game today.”
Southampton consolidated third place in the standings, while Sunderland remained near the bottom on eight points from eight games. Pelle now has six Premier league goals in his first season in England, to add to his match-winning Italy debut during the international break.
The former Feyenoord striker would have been proud of Vergini’s own goal, as his botched clearance turned into a clinical finish from the edge of the area.
Pelle then scored with a tap-in and Cork killed the game off before the break.
Dusan Tadic, Victor Wanyama and Sadio Mane were the other scorers for Southampton after the break.
Saints may boast the player of the month in Pelle but they also have the best defense in English football having conceded just five league goals this season under new manager Ronald Koeman.
Everton beat Villa
Everton consigned Aston Villa to a fourth straight defeat by winning 3-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday in a match featuring the return after injury of Ross Barkley.
Phil Jagielka scored for the second straight match to give Everton an 18th-minute lead and Villa’s American goalkeeper, Brad Guzan, let Romelu lukaku’s shot squirm away from him to make it 2-0 in the 48th.
Free-scoring right back Seamus Coleman completed the easy win in the 76th.
Barkley, the young England midfielder, played 66 minutes in his first appearance of the season after knee-ligament damage.
It was Everton’s first home win of the season.
Newcastle get first win
later, Gabriel Obertan goal helped Newcastle to first win of the season against leicester City.
