Germans win Davis Cup doubles clash

brisbane: Tim Puetz and Jan-lennard Struff won a thrilling doubles clash to give Germany a 2-1 lead after the second day of their World Group Davis Cup tie against Australia in Brisbane on Saturday. The German duo silenced the big crowd at Pat Rafter Arena as they overcame John Peers and Matthew Ebden 6-4, 6-7 (1/7), 6-2, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4 in just over three-and-a-quarter hours. The Germans made a late switch to their doubles team, bringing in Struff for Peter Gojowcyzk. Struff played alongside Puetz in the World Group playoffs against Portugal last year, when they also won in five sets. The tie will now hinge on Sunday's first reverse singles between Kyrgios and world number five Alexander Zverev.

Bangla struggle after lanka's massive lead

Chittagong: Sri lanka spinners led by Rangana Herath took three crucial wickets late in day four to leave Bangaldesh with an uphill task of saving the opening Test in Chittagong on Saturday. Bangladesh reached 81-3 at stumps, still needing 119 to make Sri lanka bat again. The visitors declared their first innings at 713-9 in the final session. Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera dismissed Imrul Kayes for 19 before left-arm unorthodox bowler lakshan Sandakan got Tamim Iqbal caught behind for 41. Herath then removed Mushfiqur Rahim for two with his left-arm spin in the last over of the day. Mominul Haque -- 18 not out -- was at the crease at end of the day. Sri lanka declared their innings in the third over into the final session with a lead of 200 runs in response to Bangladesh's first innings total of 513.

lynn, Maxwell star in Australia T20 win

sydney: Power hitters Chris lynn and Glenn Maxwell propelled Australia to a convincing seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first tri-series Twenty20 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. lynn (44 runs from 33 balls) and Maxwell (40 not out from 24 balls) shared in a scorching 77-run stand from just 53 balls to steer Australia to the rain-reduced total of 95 from 15 overs with 21 balls to spare. Despite a top-order wobble, in which captain David Warner and the debutant D'Arcy Short fell inside the first three overs, the belligerent power of lynn and Maxwell swamped the Kiwi bowling attack. Australia's victory was earlier set up by towering paceman Billy Stanlake whose fierce pace justified Warner's decision to bowl first after winning the toss, as he wrecked New Zealand's top order with three wickets in the space of his first eight balls.

Murray hails Brits on day of Davis Cup underdogs

paris: Andy Murray hailed unheralded British compatriot Cameron Norrie as "amazing" on Friday as Davis Cup underdogs delivered a series of body blows to the established powers of men's tennis. Murray was the architect of Britain's Davis Cup title triumph in 2015 but injury ruled him out of the trip to Marbella to face Spain, playing in their clay court comfort zone. But Norrie, making his debut in the competition, stunned Spain's 23rd-ranked Roberto Bautista Agut 4-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to pull Britain level at 1-1 in the World Group tie after world number 21 Albert Ramos-Vinolas had seen off liam Broady 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8/6). "That's one of the most amazing wins/results/upsets I've seen in a long time on a tennis court.. Well done to cam norrie and all the team.. Broady was excellent," tweeted Murray, recovering at home from hip surgery.
