OJHA IGNORED IN BENGAl'S SQUAD FOR RANJI TROPHY

Kolkata: India discard Pragyan Ojha was on Tuesday left out of Bengal's squad for Ranji Trophy, despite not being released by Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) to play for Hyderabad. Having played two seasons with Bengal, Ojha's NOC request to return to his home state was declined by CAB president Sourav Ganguly who had said they needed "his service". Apparently upset with the decision, Ojha did not turn up for pre-season practice and had been incommunicado since then as the Bengal selectors opted for a 16-member squad to be led by Manoj Tiwary for their first two Ranji matches. Bengal will take on Services from October 6-9 at Palam, New Delhi, before facing Chhattisgarh from October 14-17 at Raipur.

STRONG REASONS BEHIND KANG’S EXClUSION: INJETI

New Delhi: Sports Secretary Injeti Srinivas on Tuesday made it clear that merit is the sole criteria for including individual athletes in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and there were strong reasons behind javelin thrower Davinder Singh Kang's exclusion from the list. Davinder, who became the first Indian javelin thrower to make the final of the World Championships in london last month, expressed his disappointment over his exclusion from the TOPS list and had even considered moving to Italy. But Injeti, who is also the Director General of Sports Authority of India (SAI), refused to pay attention to Davinder's agitations. "The decision of individual athlete's inclusion in TOPS is decided purely on merit," he told PTI on the sidelines of 'National Workshop on Sports for All' here.
