Bryan's feat

Mike Bryan has become the winningest men's doubles player with his 1,052nd career victory. Bryan teamed with his twin brother, Bob, to beat the French team of Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 7-5 and reach the US Open semifinals. Mike Bryan improved to 1,052-330, a .761 winning percentage. He passed Canadian Daniel Nestor, who has 1,051 victories. The Bryan brothers, seeking their record 17th Grand Slam doubles title, are the No 5 seeds and will next play the 11th-seeded Spanish duo of Feliciano lopez and Marc lopez. Bob Bryan has 1,038 career victories.

Cash, Stich among nominees

Wimbledon champions Pat Cash and Michael Stich are among the nominees for the International Tennis Hall of Fame's Class of 2018. Also up for induction next year are Grand Slam doubles champions Helena Sukova, Anders Jarryd, and Tom Okker. The hall announced the candidates Tuesday. Cash, who coaches CoCo Vandeweghe, won the singles title at the All England Club in 1987, famously climbing into the stands to celebrate. He also was a two-time runner-up at the Australian Open and reached a career-best ranking of No 4. Stich won the men's singles championship at Wimbledon in 1991, and teamed with John McEnroe to win the doubles title a year later.

Fognini apologises

ROME: Fabio Fognini has apologized for insulting a chair umpire at the US Open and said he is prepared to discuss his mistake with schoolchildren as a lesson. Fognini was kicked out of the New York tournament on Saturday and could be banned from all Grand Slam events. "I apologize to everyone, not only the chair umpire, to whom I already apologized in New York, but to everyone who felt offended — women above all," Fognini told Italy's Sky TV in a report that was broadcast Tuesday. "Being described as sexist hurt me, because it's not true," said Fognini.
