Hamilton takes all-important pole at Italian GP

MONZA: lewis Hamilton took the all-important pole position for the Italian Grand Prix on Saturday, beating Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg's time by nearly half a second in a commanding performance. Since 2000, the pole sitter has won 13 of 16 races in Monza and each of the past six years — with Hamilton himself taking three of those victories. That means the pole has been more important in Italy recently than Monaco, where the top qualifier has won only 11 of the last 17 years. Hamilton finished 0.478 ahead of Rosberg. The Ferraris followed, with Sebastian Vettel eight tenths back in third and Kimi Raikkonen nearly a second behind in fourth. Hamilton joined F1 greats Juan Manuel Fangio and Ayrton Senna with a record five poles at Monza.

Aguero banned for three matches

lONDON: Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will miss the derby against Manchester United after receiving a three-match ban from the English Football Association on Friday for elbowing an opponent. The FA said it retrospectively punished Aguero for violent conduct in last weekend's win against West Ham because match officials didn't see the incident but it was caught on camera. Aguero swung a left elbow toward the face of West Ham defender Winston Reid in the 76th minute of City's 3-1 win on Sunday. City will now have to cope without Aguero for the Sept 10 match against Manchester United.

Messi ruled out of Venezuela qualifier

Buenos Aires: Argentina striker lionel Messi will miss Tuesday's 2018 World Cup qualifier away to Venezuela with a groin problem, national team coach Edgardo Bauza said on Friday. "Unfortunately, he won't be able to play. We can't take any risks. We spoke with the doctor and it's the sensible thing to do. It must be treated, we must take care of him," Bauza told reporters at the team's training base in Buenos Aires.    Agencies
