Police Personnel Killed

French President Francois Hollande said he wants additional security efforts to be deployed and vigilance to be increased to “its highest level” after two police officials were killed by an attacker claiming allegiance to the Islamic State group. Hollande spoke on Tuesday in the Elysee Palace as police are investigating the Monday night attack in the Paris suburb of Magnanville. Hollande did not give details about the extra security measures. France is already under a state of emergency after IS attacks on Paris in November, and 90,000 security forces are deployed for the European Championship soccer tournament.

More than 2,400 security officials will be deployed in lens as the town prepares for an anticipated influx of 40,000 to 50,000 England and Wales fans for Thursday’s European Championship game, authorities said on Tuesday. The policing operation in the tournament’s smallest host city and its 35,000-capacity stadium has been intensified after clashes involving England and Russia fans around their opening Group B game in Marseille. The Stade Bollaert-Delelis can fit the entire population of lens, whose narrow streets will be on lockdown.

Some scuffles have started in lille, where English, Russian and Welsh fans are gathering ahead of European Championship matches in the northeastern French city and in nearby lens. At least one person was detained by police in lille, which is on a direct rail line from london and Marseille.
