lahiri finishes 41st

Charlotte (US): Indian golfer Anirban lahiri never got the momentum going on the final day and slipped to a disappointing T-41 at the Wells Fargo Championships here. Seemingly set for a charge into Top-10, lahiri began the day at one-under 215, and shot 75 to finish at two-over 290 and into the 40s. After a series of eight missed cuts going back to February, James Hahn finally came through to win in a play-off against Roberto Castro, as bigger names like Justin Rose (71 and third), Rory McIlroy (66), Phil Mickelson (66) and Rickie Fowler (71) ended in a tie for fourth. Starting off the first, lahiri bogeyed the third and sixth to roll backwards. Birdies on seventh and ninth seemed to get him back into Top-25. Following the turn, when he just couldn’t get the putter going missing really small ones, he bogeyed three in a row from 11th. A birdie on 14th was a minor consolation before he bogeyed yet again the 18th hole.

FC Goa challenges commission’s order

Panaji: Indian Super league (ISl) side FC Goa, which was slapped a Rs 11 crore fine and their co-owners Shrinivas Dempo and Dattaraj Salgaocar banned for two and three seasons respectively, has challenged the order of the tournament’s regulatory commission. FC Goa has on Sunday filed an appeal before the ISl Appeals Commission challenging the said order. On May 5, the ISl Regulatory Commission took the decisions after the conclusion of the hearings in Mumbai relating to the controversy surrounding the scuffle between Chennaiyin FC’s Brazillian marquee player Elano Blumer and FC Goa officials after the ISl second season final in Margao in December last. As per the appeal copy, which in possession with PTI, no opportunity was given to cross examine any of the witnesses and no opportunity was afforded to FC Goa to present evidence as to what actually transpired on December 20. “The statement of the football legend, Arthur Antunes Coimbra (better known as Zico) as to what actually transpired on December 20 has been shut out and truth made a casualty,” the club has claimed. FC Goa termed the order as “perverse, unlawful and in complete violation of principles of natural justice”.

FSDl appeals against 15 point deduction

New Delhi: With a 15 point deduction set to turn FC Goa’s next ISl football campaign into an exercise in futility, the organisers Football Sports Development limited (FSDl) a joint venture between IMG-Reliance and Star India, has appealed to members of Regulatory Commission reconsider their decision. If FC Goa starts with a points tally of minus 15, it would effectively mean a seven team league as Zico coached team will practically not have any chance of making to knock-out stage even if they win all 14 matches. “FSDl feels that it would be uncompetitive for the team to start their Hero ISl 2016 season with a negative 15 points and will undoubtedly affect the morale of the team as well as the fans,” a press release from the organisers stated.

Murray splits from coach Mauresmo

london: Andy Murray split with coach Amelie Mauresmo on Monday, ending a groundbreaking two-year relationship during which the British star improved as a clay-court player but failed to add to his collection of Grand Slam titles. A statement released by Murray’s management company didn’t disclose the reason behind the decision, although Mauresmo said “dedicating enough time along with the travel has been a challenge for me.” The Frenchwoman gave birth to her first child in August and took six months off from coaching. “Working with Andy over the last two years has been a fantastic experience for me,” said Mauresmo, a former top-ranked player who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2006. Murray became the first high-profile tennis player to hire a woman as a coach when he brought Mauresmo on board in June 2014.
