petition against ipl matches filed

kanpur: After Maharashtra and Rajasthan, IPl matches scheduled in Kanpur seem to be heading into trouble as an NGO here on Friday filed a petition seeking cancellation of two encounters at Greenpark Stadium citing lack of water. Greenpark is scheduled to host two matches of local boy Suresh Raina-led Gujarat lions — against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 19, and Mumbai Indians on May 21. Anita Dua of NGO lakshya said she had filed a petition before the Civil Judge (Junior Division) through a lawyer stating the city witnesses confrontation between people over water everyday. "If IPl matches are allowed in the city hundreds of litres of water would be required to prepare the pitches. Which is wrong. So we've requested the matches not be allowed keeping in mind the problem," Dua said. Hearing on the petition will take place on April 25.

Youths demonstrate in front of sms

jaipir: A group of youths on Friday demonstrated in front of Sawai Mansingh Stadium here against the Rajasthan government's decision to hold IPl matches in the state despite water crisis. "There is a water crisis in Rajasthan and the state capital is also facing water shortage and lakhs of people are suffering due to this problem, but the government has decided to conduct IPl matches, which is unfair and against the public interest," Rahul Tanwar, who led the demonstration, said. He said that the government should withdraw its decision and focus on meeting the water shortage problem to provide relief to people, instead of opting for this "entertainment" activity, Tanwar, who is a member of Congress, said. Around 50 youths participated in the demonstration.

BCCI waives $ 41.97m claim on WICb

new delhi: BCCI president Shashank Manohar stated that the board has decided to waive off the financial penalty of $41.97 million that was imposed on the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) for pulling out midway during their 2014 series against India. Manohar has also said that the remaining part of that series will be played in 2017. The ice in the bilateral relation between the two boards that had turned frosty was broken once WICB announced that India will be touring Caribbean for a four-Test series, this summer. "That is now sorted out because they are going to come back and play here next year. They have to complete those [unfinished] games. That was a claim raised by the board. [We] would be satisfied by them coming and playing here," Manohar told ESPNcricinfo.

‘Some people out to destroy ipl’

Pune: Indian Premier league has emerged as a global sports brand, but some people are trying to "destroy" it and new controversies are being created every year, leading BCCI to consider shifting the cash-rich tournament abroad in 2017, IPl Chairman Rajeev Shukla said on Friday. When the WT20 was taking place in India just a month ago, nobody raised the issue of water being used for preparing cricket grounds, he said referring to controversy around using water for maintaining pitches for IPl matches in drought-affected Maharashtra. The senior Congress leader, who was in the city to attend a party function, was speaking to reporters. "Several matches took place in Maharashtra during T20 World Cup and same amount of water was being used (for IPl matches). However, nobody questioned use of water at that time and it is only during IPl the issue has been raised," he said.
