Tavecchio accused of discrimination

ROME: Italian football federation president Carlo Tavecchio is under pressure again for alleged discriminatory remarks, this time reportedly aimed at Jews and gays. Italian daily Corriere della Sera reports that Tavecchio made the remarks to online outlet Soccer life in June while discussing the sale of an amateur league’s headquarters to real estate mogul Cesare Anticoli. Tavecchio tells Corriere that he’s being targeted for blackmail and that he doesn’t recall uttering the alleged remarks, adding that they “might have been manipulated.” Still, local Jewish and gay rights groups called for Tavecchio’s removal. Tavecchio was already suspended for six months by UEFA last year when he made a racist comment during his election campaign, causing a stir over a reference to bananas when discussing the presence of foreign players in Italy.

‘Ferrari veto is like having a gun’

MEXICO CITY: The president of Formula One’s governing body called Ferrari’s veto power over regulations changes “like having a gun” and said he was disappointed the Italian team recently blocked a cost cap for customer engines.”A veto is like having a gun in your pocket, and you have to be careful when you use a gun. It has to be determined that there is something that goes against their interests. Trying to suggest a customer engine is not against their interests,” FIA President Jean Todt said. To help small teams cut costs and compete, Todt wants to introduce in 2017 a cheaper engine than those supplied by Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda.
