Doubts mount over Aus tour of B'desh
sydney: Australia's upcoming cricket tour to Bangladesh appeared increasingly likely to be abandoned on Tuesday amid warnings from Britain and the United States of security threats and concerns that militants were planning to target Australian interests. Cricket Australia head of security Sean Carroll, team manager Gavin Dovey and team security manager Frank Dimasi were due to return to Australia from Bangladesh on Tuesday after meetings with local security and intelligence personnel and brief officials in Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and the Cricket Australia board on Wednesday. Their recommendation will likely determine the future of the tour, which was to include two test matches and begin with a warm-up match on Saturday. Security concerns increased Monday when an Italian citizen was shot to death by a gunman on a motorcycle while walking in Dhaka's diplomatic zone.
Protests outside Eden
kolkata: A group of protesters under the banner of Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) on Tuesday assembled outside Eden Gardens, shouting slogans against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's "intervention" in Cricket Association of Bengal. "We reject government's intervention in autonomous sport bodies... We condemn chief minister's imposing of president and joint-secretary at CAB," the BBD Bagh branch of APDR said in its protest. Three days after the demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Mamata announced Sourav Ganguly as the next CAB president, and Dalmiya's son Avishek as joint secretary, at the state secretariat Nabanna.
Kaushal barred from using doosra colombo
Sri lankan off spinner Tharindu Kaushal is banned from using a variation in his bowling after independent assessments concluded that he bowls it with an illegal action, the International Cricket Council announced on Tuesday. The ICC said in a statement that Kaushal can continue to bowl his stock delivery, the off spinner, in international cricket but will not be permitted to use the "doosra" — the ball that is delivered with an off spinner's action but spins way from the right handed batsman. Kaushal was tested after match officials reported him for a suspect action at the end of the third and final test match against India earlier this month.
