Italy snap losing streak at Rugby World Cup
leeds: Italy ended a six-match losing streak at the expense of one of its favorite opponents in beating Canada 23-18 at Elland Road for its first win in Rugby World Cup Pool D on Saturday. Italy had won four straight against the Canadians since their first Cup match in 2003, and were just the tonic the European side needed for an overdue confidence boost. The Italians even made some history. They were 10-0 down after 16 minutes, so managed to pull off the biggest comeback in a Cup match since the 2007 quarterfinals, where France beat New Zealand from 13-0 down. Italy didn't get on top of Canada until right on halftime, when flyhalf Tommaso Allan kicked his second penalty. The teams scored two tries each, and the excitement was heightened by shoddy tackling. To have a shot at making the quarterfinals, the Italians must beat Ireland next. But the Irish aren't one of their favorite opponents, not with only one win against them in 18 years.
