 Oscars’ Possible release condemned

Johannesburg: The mother of Oscar Pistorius’s slain girlfriend told a newspaper on Sunday it would be too early to release the fallen Paralympian from prison as early as August for good conduct. The 28-year-old South African double amputee sprinter was found guilty last year of culpable homicide and sentenced to five years in prison for shooting his girlfriend, model and TV presenter Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day 2013. Pistorius claimed that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder, firing four shots through a locked bathroom door. He is now waiting for the South African prison authorities to decide whether to grant him conditional release, possibly from August. If Pistorius is released then, he will have spent just 10 months in prison. “I don’t think it is long enough for somebody who has caused somebody’s death,” Reeva’s mother June Steenkamp told South Africa’s Sunday Times newspaper. “Surely her life is worth more than 10 months’ incarcerationIJ He’s taken something so precious out of our lives. Her life is gone,” Steenkamp added.

dharambir in-charge of hoa

Chandigarh: BJP MP Dharambir Singh, who has taken charge of the Congress-backed faction of Haryana Olympic Association (HOA), said he would endeavour to take the state to new heights in sports arena and work for the interests of athletes by rising above political considerations. Singh, who had last year switched over from the Congress party to join the BJP, took charge as the HOA president at a function held at its headquarters at Panchkula on Saturday. The MP said that he had been “unanimously elected” as the HOA chief as its previous head P V Rathee had relinquished charge. A week back, at a meeting, Singh’s name was announced as the next HOA chief. Interestingly, the move to appoint Dharambir as HOA president came barely a fortnight after Haryana BJP MlA Shyam Singh Rana had constituted Olympic Association Haryana to take the reign of sports activities in the state on the grounds that the athletes were  suffering.
