PSG clinch ligue 1 title
Paris: Paris Saint-Germain clinched a third successive ligue 1 with a 2-1 win at Montpellier on Saturday, securing the first trophy of a possible domestic treble. PSG needed only a draw to secure the championship with a match to spare, but goals from Blaise Matuidi and Ezequiel lavezzi put the outcome almost beyond doubt within 25 minutes. PSG moved eight points above second-place lyon, which was held to 1-1 at home by Bordeaux. PSG added the league to the French league Cup victory in April, and has the French Cup final on May 30.
Boca kicked out of Copa
Asuncion (Paraguay): Boca Juniors was kicked out of the remainder of this year’s Copa libertadores competition on Saturday night as punishment for its fans spraying a caustic substance on an opposing team in a tournament game. The announcement came after the governing body of CONMEBOl met to discuss punishment for the Argentine team over the Thursday night incident in game against bitter rival River Plate. The body ruled that Boca will have to play its next four home international matches without fans in the stands. The team also will not be able to sell its fans tickets for its next four away games and it was fined $200,000. The second-leg match in the round of 16 on Thursday was stopped when River Plate players were sprayed with a caustic substance as they took the field for the second half. Many rubbed their eyes or doused them with water to clear their vision. Boca on Sunday said they will appeal their ouster from the competition. “Games are won on the pitch. Otherwise we are hostages of the violent ones,” said Boca president Daniel Angelici.
Zenit win league title
St Petersburg: Zenit St. Petersburg won the Russian Premier league title for the fourth time on Sunday, securing the championship by drawing 1-1 with FC Ufa. Zenit, which last won the Russian champion in 2012, has dominated the league all season as its big-spending strategy finally paid off. One of those expensive acquisitions, Hulk, scored Zenit’s goal with a fierce free-kick. Haris Handzic’s late header for Ufa dampened the party mood, but fans celebrated the final whistle as coach Andre Villas-Boas hugged his players in celebration.
