Pinki feels pressure of expectations

New Delhi: She ousted none other than Olympic bronze-medallist M C Mary Kom to make the Commonwealth Games-bound Indian team but far from revelling in the new-found attention, Pinki Jangra says she has begun to feel the pressure of delivering a medal after her giant-slaying act in the trials. The 24-year-old flyweight boxer from Haryana created quite a flutter after getting the better of five-time world champion Mary Kom, who was on a comeback trail after a two-year birth following the birth of her third child, in the recent trials. “I feel a bit of pressure now. I have beaten the best in trials, now I would have to prove myself a worthy selection. That is possible only through a medal at CWG. I have to get a medal to prove myself. So, yes there will be pressure on me,” Pinki told PTI.

Sao Paulo: A Brazilian court has sentenced football legend Pele’s son Edinho to 33 years in prison for laundering money for drug traffickers, media reports have said. Edson Cholbi Nascimento, nicknamed Edinho, denies the charges in the case, which dates from 2005, and will be allowed to remain free pending appeal, said CBN radio and news site G1. The Praia Grande criminal court in Sao Paulo on Saturday also sentenced three other defendants to 33 years and ordered the confiscation of all property seized in the police operation against them, including about 100 cars. Edinho, 43, is accused of ties with a drug cartel led by Ronaldo “Naldinho” Duarte Barsotti. But though he admits buying drugs from the cartel, he denies working with them. Edinho had a relatively low-key career in the 1990s playing for Santos, the same club where his father shot to fame.

Qatari paid millions for WC: Report

london: A former top Qatari football official paid more than $5 million to get support for the emirate’s controversial campaign to host the 2022 World Cup, a British newspaper alleged Sunday. The Sunday Times said it had obtained millions of emails and other documents relating to alleged payments made by Mohamed Bin Hammam, then a FIFA executive member for Qatar. It alleged that Bin Hammam, who is also an ex-Asian Football Confederation (AFC) president, used slush funds to pay cash to top football officials to win a “groundswell” of support for Qatar’s World Cup bid. Bin Hammam, who launched an abortive challenge against incumbent FIFA president Sepp Blatter, resigned from his FIFA and AFC posts in 2012, shortly before he was banned for life from football administration by the global governing body’s ethics committee.
