Shiv wants to play with Tiger

Dubai: India’s Shiv Kapur had mixed feeling after playing a modest one-under 71 in the final round to finish tied 48th at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday, even as Stephen Gallacher became the first in 25 years history of the tournament to retain the title. Kapur, who made the cut in each of the three events on the Desert Swing, said, “It was a decent in the sense that my game is going in the right direction, but it is just a question of things falling in place. Each of the days, I felt I left something out there, but that is something I can work on. I am going back home tonight and possibly I will get to play a few holes with Tiger. That should be some experience. Then I am off to South Africa for two weeks and I hope I can improve further on the results,” said Kapur.

Beckham yet to finish his lego Taj

london: England’s popular footballer David Beckham has confessed his love for a different kind of sport — building lego blocks — and that he tried his hand at building the iconic Taj Mahal too using the small plastic bricks. “What would I like to do if I wasn’t a footballerIJ I love drawing cartoons and building lego with my sons... When I was in Milan, I had a lot of time on my hands and found online that there’s a Taj Mahal lego set you can buy, so I bought it,” he told The Sunday Times. However, Beckham never finished building the 5,900-piece lego marble mausoleum. “I only built some of it because I got injured halfway through — not while building the lego. I know it’s not a career but I love doing it,” he added.

Punjab closer to main rd berth

New Delhi: last year’s semifinalists Punjab inched closer to clinching a berth in the Senior National Football Championships for the Santosh Trophy after defeating Jammu and Kashmir by a solitary goal here on Sunday. Gurpreet Singh scored the all-important gaol in the 38th minute in the Group B tie of the North Zone qualifying round at the Ambedkar Stadium. Punjab now have six points from two matches while Jammu and Kashmir remained on three from that many matches. Jammu & Kashmir had two good chances to equalise in the second half but centre forward Prem Kumar and substitute Toufeeq Ahmed missed the target. In the other match of the day, Uttar Pradesh got the better of Himachal Pradesh 1-0, courtesy a sixth minute strike from forward Sumit Kumar Dubey. Dubey prodded from close after being set up by midfielder Rustam Pal. Uttar Pradesh now have three points from two matches while Himachal are yet to open their account.

Mohun Bagan beat United Sikkim

Kolkata: looking for their elusive trophy, Mohun Bagan started their IFA Shield campaign on a positive note beating United Sikkim FC 1-0 in their opening group league encounter here on Sunday. Kerala lad CS Sabeeth converted a flag-kick from statemate Denson Devadas in the 27th minute to help the green and maroon brigade log home full points. In the match otherwise dominated by Mohun Bagan, the hosts had got another opportunity to buttress the lead in the 85th minute from a penalty, but the opportunity was missed by midfielder Zakir. In the 37th minute, Japanese livewire Katsumi Yusa also took a powerful shot but it missed the net and hit the post. Despite the absence of star striker Odafa and goalie Shilton Paul, Bangan were in control all through the match.
