Benaud injured in accident

Sydney: Former Australian cricket captain Richie Benaud has injured himself in a car accident and will remain in hospital for two weeks to recover. The 83-year-old cricketer-turned-commentator ended up with chest and shoulder injuries, besides a broken sternum, when his 1963 Sunbeam Alpine “mounted a nature strip and hit a small brick wall”. “No one else was injured, and I was more worried about the car than myself,” Benaud said in a statement. He is expected to be hospitalised for two weeks at the Prince of Wales hospital, local media reports stated.

rashid khan stretches lead

Greater Noida: Delhi’s Rashid Khan stretched his lead to three shots after returning a four-under-68 in round two of the BIlT Open 2013 here on Thursday. Rashid’s total score stood at 12-under-132 at the halfway stage, while Kolkata’s SSP Chowrasia fired a seven-under-65 in round two to be placed second at the Jaypee Greens Golf Resort. Rashid (64-68), a 10th tee starter yesterday, got into his stride early on in the round as he collected birdies on the 11th and 12th to build on his first round lead. He landed his approach shot within a foot of the pin on the 11th and made a good up and down from the bunker on the 12th. The 22-year-old salvaged another birdie from the bunker on the second hole. The bogey on the third was the only blemish on his card. Rashid went on to sink birdie putts from 15 feet and 10 feet on the fifth and eighth, respectively.

Sachin above Ponting, lara: Tait

Mumbai: Australia pacer Shaun Tait on Thursday rated batting great Sachin Tendulkar higher than compatriot Ricky Ponting and West Indian legend Brian lara. “It was a short span of career I had with Australia. I was lucky enough to play against Brian lara, play with Ricky Ponting and play against Sachin. I think Sachin is probably just above those other two,” Tait told reporters at the launch of KOOH Sports Cricket Development Centre here. The 30-year old, who retired from ODI and Test cricket, said he cherished taking Tendulkar’s wicket for the last time in the 2011 World Cup match against India. “Obviously my last match was against India in the 2011 World Cup. It was actually the last time I got to dismiss him and I got his wicket. He obviously made a good 50 in that match and India beat us. But for me the memory of taking his wicket will always remain,” he said.

Slow start by Jeev in Japan

Sodegaura (Japan): Ace Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh, playing only his fourth event of the season in Japan, carded a disappointing three-over 74 to lie precariously at the end of the first day of the Bridgestone Open 2013. Jeev, who has been hit by injuries through the season, is lying tied 66th and will need a strong second round to make the midway cut. Meanwhile, champion of the past two years Toru Taniguchi, who has won the event three times overall, once again took the lead with a four-under 67. He shared the lead with Korean Kim Sung-yoon. Terumichi Kakazu, Yosuke Asaji and Daisuke Maruyama shared the third place with cards of 68 each.
