Gambhir fails again

Manchester: India discard Gautam Gambhir’s woeful form in the county circuit continued as he failed to make a significant contribution for the third time in a row during a one day game for the Yorkshire Bank Pro 40 Championship. Gambhir made only 2 after Essex captain James Foster elected to bat at the Old Trafford ground. The left-hander, who is fighting to make a comeback into the Indian team had scored 31 in a first-class game against Northamptonshire and 21 in a Pro-40 game against Derbyshire. On Monday Gambhir was the first batsmen to get out after facing nine deliveries as he poked at an away-going delivery of seamer Kabir Ali which was snapped up by veteran South African Ashwell Prince in the slip cordon.

Tiwary to miss Ranji season

New Delhi: After a career-threatening knee injury that required two surgeries within days of each other, Manoj Tiwary is back from london and is ready to accept the fact that he won’t be able to play for Bengal in the upcoming Ranji Trophy. “You can’t fight destiny. The doctor (Dr Andrew Williams) has told me specifically that a minimum of four months is required for rehabilitation and I have to take it from there on. Right now, I am just ready to take one day at a time. I just want to be fit before I can resume playing. I am not even thinking about coming back during the end stages of Ranji Trophy,” 27-year-old Tiwary said. “I am still on crutches but I have to do seven to eight physiotherapy drills every day. That’s a part of my rehab programme. The doctor as well as the BCCI physio (Kamlesh) who was present there are happy with progress. But I have had a second surgery after there was internal bleeding post the first surgery. So it will certainly take time,” Tiwary explained. He did admit that he was taken aback when a second surgery was needed.

England entered the series in third position with 112 ratings points. However, after taking a 3-0 lead in the five-Test series, it needed either a draw or a win to move ahead of India into second position.
