Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns

At: PVR & others Rated: 5.5/10

It is a foregone conclusion that sequels hardly ever manage to be as brilliant as the original. But for once, a movie does manage to have enough masala with a series of twists and turns that makes it an entertainer. It has some brilliant performance from Irrfan Khan or Saheb in Jimmy Shergill who is as cunning and sharp as one would need to be so as to survive in politics.

Set in Uttar Pradesh, the movie revolves around how people will go to any lengths to hold on to their chair even thrown their wife into the game just to get more business. But Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is about more than just a game that people play, it is about how to manipulate the other, bring him down, so that one can maintain one’s kingship. like Saheb said — Har rishte ke peechey ek saazish hai.

With a series of events that would probably make Chanakya neeti proud, Saheb, Biwi… takes you on a ride where one forgets who is doing what, to whom and who is on whose side. With each trying to kill the other to gain power, bullets being fired because that is how it is done makes for an interesting watch.

But then the same thing is repeated over and over again. Just the setting and the pawns change. Tigmanshu Dhulia has been unable to take the movie move forward and therefore everything looks forced. The songs don’t help the plot and nor does the fact that the movie is 145 minutes long.

However, the film scores when it comes to the performance of the actors. A few lighter moments, where Irrfan Khan posses as a journalist and visits the Chief Minister who is busy watching porn on the laptop and unable to turn it off, makes this one worth a watch.
