Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge
Cast: Johnny Depp, Javier Bardem, Brenton Thwaites, Kaya Scodelario, Kevin McNally, Geoffrey Rush
Rated: 7/10
It all started back in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl which received rave reviews and grossed around $654 million worldwide. Captain jack Sparrow — the anti-hero — overnight became a superhero, from whereon Depp fans have only wanted the actor to better himself and his antics in the Pirates.... series.
Directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg had their work cut out when they took on the task of dishing out this finale. They do deliver when it comes to visuals — a treat to watch, especially the climax where the ocean parts. Even The Ten Commandents couldn’t deliver what this manages to, leaving your mouth wide open.
The franchise has always been about Captain Jack Sparrow and his quirky one-liners delivered under the influence of rum and devil may-care attitude, occupying centrestage. Anything less than this is not what Captain Sparrow’s fans are looking for or wanting. That is where this one faulters.
Not that our Captain has any less screenplay; it is just that he let others take the stage and shine while he chooses to be peripheral. Not that he is easy to miss. After all, he is Jack Sparrow and everybody is looking for him, including the British Navy — all with one intent — to kill him. But do not forget, this loveable pirate has some friends.
The movie does have its funny moments. For example, Carina Smyth: Are all pirates this stupidIJ Captain Jack Sparrow: Yes. Another one — Carina Smyth: I’m not looking for trouble! Captain Jack Sparrow: What a horrible way to live.
But being funny is only part of what our Captain does best. He is a pirate and he must chase treasure. This is more about revenge. It is another matter we come to know how and why Jack got his last name, Sparrow.
As for Depp playing Sparrow, over the years, through this series and other movies that he has done, he has proved that he is a brilliant actor.
Overall a watchable movie.
