The lunchbox

Starring: Irrfan, Nimrat Kaur, Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Rated: 6.5/10

This one is a love story like no other. First, the two people never share a single frame in the entire 109 minutes of the film. Second, there is no running around a tree, just a background score. Third, love blooms via a letter that said the food was good but salty. The reaction to this — food in the lunchbox that was extra spicy. So, yes this movie once reiterates the fact that Bollywood knows how to tell a love story.

Those looking for a typical lovey-dovey story will be disappointed for this one has no exotic locales nor are the protagonists wearing fashionable clothes. It is the simplicity with which debut director director Ritesh Batra has told this story that makes the heart warm all over.

Added to this is the brilliant performance by Irrfan as Saajan Fernandez and Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Sheikh. Their interaction is enjoyable and brings quite a few laughs. Nimrat Kaur, as a neglected housewife, brings freshness to the character. The downers, it is too slow and since a majority of the dialogues are in English with no subtitles means there may not be very many takers.

So, watch this one for its purity and simplicity.
