URVASHI DHOlAKIA talks to PARTH TAYAl about her comeback on TV as a vamp on the fantasy thriller Chandrakanta
You became famous as the most attractive vamp on Indian Television and now you are back in yet another villainous avatar in Chandrakanta...
I am portraying the role of the evil queen Iravati who has a lot of magical powers and yet she desires to have more powers to rule the entire world. In this pursuit, she will go to any extent with the help of her son to obtain those powers either by hook or by crook.
What made you take up this characterIJ
I love fairy tales and I have grown up reading them. I also love magic, so this show offered me everything I have always dreamt of. It also helped me away from stereotypical vamp roles in saas bahu shows.
What preparations did you do for your roleIJ
I have stopped analysing the process of acting. This is something that appealed to me. I am learning horse riding for the show. Though Madhurima and Vishal have become excellent riders, I continue to struggle to control it. I think, by the end of this show, I will be a perfect horse rider.
How have screen vamps changed over the yearsIJ
I don’t think it has changed much and I don’t like to be called a vamp. Every villain is a different character and the portrayal of each character is different, performed by different individuals and that is what brings diversity into these negative characters.
What impact did Kasauti Zindagi Ki have on your careerIJ
It had a massive impact on my career as it brought me into limelight. Another show that gave a boost to my career was way back in 2013 when I won Big Boss Season Six on Colors. To be back again with Balaji Telefilms through Chandrakanta feels like a reunion of one big family.
After winning Big Boss Season 6 you took a break. What were you doingIJ
I have been working all my life. I preferred my family over work, especially after doing a show like Big Boss where one is isolated from friends and family for such a long time and makes one realise their true importance.
Would you ever like to play a positive characterIJ
I have played a positive character. In-fact I have done comedy too, but people never took notice of it. So I have again made a comeback with the role of a villain, as people think that is what suits me.
Being such a popular star, why are you still doing TV and not filmsIJ
I never got any offer from the film industry, so have never done any. Obviously, every actor wants to work in films and I am always open to the idea of doing a good film.
In today’s scenario, is content the king or viewersIJ
I believe both work hand in hand, if there is no content there will be no viewers. Today, the competition has increased and there are plenty of channels telecasting a plethora of shows. Only the shows that have strong content to grip the viewers are successful.
