With The Kapil Sharma Show all set to go on air next week, the host tells PRAKRITI ROY what’s in store
The wait is all but over. After a three-month wait, Kapil Sharma and his team will be back, this time on Sony, with their brand new The Kapil Sharma Show. To offer their viewers something totally different, this time the team first went for a multi-city tour through Bhopal, Amritsar and lucknow and finally ended it with a grand live show at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium.
Proudly sporting superstar Shah Rukh Khan as co-host of the show, Kapil pulled all plugs to give a four-hour riveting performance.
The live show was so designed that despite the entire cast from Comedy Nights with Kapil (minus Bua) being on stage, not a whisk of what will be on TV from April 23 was let out.
The only confirmation Kapil would give in a later interaction with journalists was that “this time, we will have a society set-up. We are all going to be neighbours in the Shantivan Cooperative Society and I will be happily unmarried.” This, he insisted, was because he didn’t want to repeat similar content. “With new characters and a new set-up, there’s lots more for us to do and the viewers to see. You never know, Sumona and I might still be fighting, as neighbours,” he said.
After the controversy and subsequent parting of ways with Colors, many copyright issues had come up. For instance, Ali Asgar can’t play drunk Dadi and Sunil Grover can no longer be Gutthi. However, these actors will continue to dress up as and play many different characters, male as well as female in the new show.
A taste of this was given to the audience at the live show, part of which will be telecast in the inaugural April 23 episode, before the series kicks off from April 24. The show will see Kapil and SRK, along with the rest of the cast, including Kiku Sharda and Chandan Prabhaker, would be regaling the audience in a different format.
During the course of this special show, Kapil and his team entertained the stadium full of viewers with a variety of different acts. Whether it was Kapil poking fun at those who walked in late or making jokes at the expense of Arvind Kejriwal’s muffler; Prabhaker laying out the problems in his life as a poor common man in the funniest manner possible; Grover dressed up as a female Haryanvi police constable; or Asgar looking like he was ready to start doing mujra any moment; the histrionics of the cast left the audience in splits.
What will be different in this show will be the execution of gags, Prabhakar said, explaining that the basic intention would be the same as ever: Making people laugh.
Clearing the air about Shilpa Shinde aka Angoori who left her show Bhabiji Ghar Pe Hain amid a legal tussle, joining the show, Kapil said: “I had absolutely no hand in her leaving her old show. Their dispute was already there. My casting team only approached her when they heard she was free. But we didn’t want to work with someone who already had these issues. So it didn’t work out. We don’t want any negativity in the new show,” he added.
Apart from returning to TV with this show, Kapil’s K9 Productions company is also working on a movie script.
The one-hour weekend show goes on air from April 23, 2016, at 9 pm on Sony Entertainment TV.
