To even understand what is happening in this biopic about the rise and fall of American rapper and actor who was violently killed at age 25 is to first understand the world of rap. Second, how the music industry works. Third, to be able to catch on the lingo that is commonly used among Blacks, which is no easy task.
If one does manage to grasp all this, one may be able to sit back and enjoy the music which was greatly influenced by social consciousness and Afro-centrism in hip hop music in the mid 80s and early 90s. The problem here is that, even if one heard any of his songs, there is little connect outside of his music even though the film keeps talking about how he was a victim of a system that made him self-destruct just because he was Black.
Though why he let that happen appears to be a mystery, he knew the pitfalls and was repeatedly warned by his mother — an American political activist and member of the Black Panther.
Over all a movie for only those who have followed his music and life.
