You could call them the odd couple of quite a bygone era. One a polished piano player, the other a black bouncer hired by the artist to drive him deep into the south with safety. Based on this road trip, and encapsulating the dark days of American history, the film showcases the Black issue in a personal kind of way. It is a languid movie not many here may relate to but that does not take away from the clever build-up, nuances and ambience the director Peter Farelli catches and displays with finnesse.
The duo in question do their best to make the film interesting despite its aversion to any kind of pace. Miggo Mortenson as the pianist who ends up looking after his Black driver Mahershala Ali is just a tad less brilliant than Ali and that’s because the script focusses more on the latter and his issues with the highly segregated society American of those days.
A niche film for a select audience at best.
