From stand-up comedy, skits, mimes, roasts to now street theatre, comedians on TV are leaving no stone unturned to experiment with laughter. Parth Tayal tells you why The Drama Company is different from other comic shows
Street plays are not just restricted to the theatre groups, drama societies of colleges and NGOs. The popular art form, an amalgamation of three forms — dance, music and drama — used to raise voice on a burning issue, and convey a message in an entertaining manner has gained popularity. So much so that Sony Entertainment channel has caught on the concept and brought the street art form to TV with their new show The Drama Company which airs on weekends at 8 pm slot right before The Kapil Sharma.
Actor-turned-comedian Krushna Abhishek, who will be seen playing multiple roles says: “The show is very different unlike the rest of the comedy shows that are at present being aired on TV. The concept is new — it is like a street play. By tapping this art form, we are going to revive the street theatre and hope audience will like and appreciate it.”
Not just a fresh format but it has stellar starcast including Mithun Chakraborty who plays Shambu Dada. “Dada will be the ring master of a crew of highly misfit characters played by Ali Asgar, Dr Sanket Bhosale, Sugandha Mishra, Sudesh lehri, Ridhima Pandit, Tanaji , Aru Verma and me,” Abhishek says.
The show’s USP are the fun situations that all these people will get into. “As the name suggests, the show is about drama (play) which is created by a group of people who will constantly ruin it due to their idiocity. That will be the biggest reason for laughter. I’m excited to be working with all the talented artists, especially Mithun dada who has been a constant source of motivation for us,” Sudesh lehri says.
Produced by lil Frodo and Frames Production Company, the show comes with a lot of challenges. “This show is challenging as we have to do comedy for two hours at a stretch, unlike the stand-up comedy which we used to do before. The other is that I am working with Kapil Sharma’s team as well. So it will take time for me to adjust with them,” Abhishek explains whose previous show Comedy Nights Bachao shut shop after it faced a lot of criticism due to its roast format.
Since it is a family show, there will be no jokes with double meaning. Therefore, the show has been given a primetime and that too on weekends. Will this drama company will be able to make an impactIJ Time will tell.
