Kavita Barjatya has come up with a unique marriage-based political alliance in Half Marriage on &TV. Pragya Mittal talks to the starcast at the launch in Mumbai

From Saat Phere to Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, be it love marriage or an arranged one, showmakers have experimented with the concept of family drama in a love story by showcasing different sides of marriage. But the new show Half Marriage on &TV will redefine the marital bond with its unique concept of a marriage based on political gains.

“The show is full on family entertainer and it will trace the lives of Chandni Kanojia and Arjun Sharma who will land in an uncommon marriage based on political influences and cultural beliefs. We were working on this story for a long time and we are finally coming up with a never-seen-before concept,” Scriptwriter-turned-producer  Kaushik Ghatak says.

Actor Priyanka Purohit, who started her career with Splitsvilla 8 on MTV, will be seen playing the lead role of Chandini whereas Tarun Mahilani, who has acted in Ugly movie, will be seen portraying Arjun. Chandini belongs to a rich political family and for whom her father is her world whereas Arjun is a middle-class boy and is totally against the injustice that prevails in the political scenario.

Being a non-trained actor, Purohit never felt out of the league. “For me, if a person can emote well, he/she can become a good actor.  Even if I have never learned acting, it wasn’t difficult for me to act as far as I feel connected to the role. For long scripted scenes, I pre-rehearse for the shot and it works well for me on the screen,” Purohit says.

Playing a lead role for the first time, Mahilani feels the character comes with a lot of challenges. “It was difficult for me to play Arjun as it is a very strong character who gets aggressive and impulsive when he sees injustice happening to the common people around him,  He is a satyawadi and can go to any extent to support the truth no matter whosoever comes in his way. But if we see today’s world, people don’t bother much about others, everyone is busy on their own which makes my character different from today’s generation,” Mahilani says.

When we talk about politics, the things which come to our minds is money, power, and greed. Playing the role of Vanraj Kanojia, who is a powerful politician in the show, well-known TV actor Satyajit Sharma says: “In the show, the audience will not see the dirty political scenario but the sophisticated one. like how a cunning politician silently controls his daughter’s life to meet his political aspirations. It was difficult for me to portray this role as my character in the show is not all emotive. He never expresses his real emotions which were hard for me to conquer. The thing which helped me to understand the role closely was the well-written script.”

Ghatak has collaborated with Kavita Barjatiya, granddaughter of famous producer Tarachand Barjatya, to launch their first show under their new production house  Conscious Dreams. For those who are bored with regular daily soaps, this show brings a new concept on television that will go on air on September 25 at 7.30 pm on &TV.
