What is it like to be back for season 3 of ElementaryIJ
It’s great being back for season 3 because it’s like a well-oiled machine now and we’re all so tight, the crew and the cast, so it’s really fun and it feels really good to know where our characters are and, sort of, the mystery is where we’re all going.
What is Watson’s relationship like with Sherlock in Season 3IJ
The relationship is pretty contentious and there are a lot of undercurrents of, I don’t know, of emotional instability between them. Basically because she feels very close to him, but was very hurt by his actions and I think there is a real chemistry between them and I think that develops and I think there are a lot of things that she doesn’t want to say to him, because it would make her too vulnerable and so in the end, you know, she ends up not saying it and trying to keep it close to her heart because I think what she would like to say is, why did you do that, why did you not come to me and talk to meIJ I think her friendship, you know, between the two of them outside of the partnership is what she was holding onto.
What do you love about playing WatsonIJ
It feels terrific to play a woman that is strong and independent and also at the same time confused and lost and trying like all women to find a relationship and to find a balance between that and a career and everything else. It’s a struggle and to show women that are going through struggles and have them be a lead on a television show or in a movie, it’s an incredibly empowering feeling and I feel like I want to share it with everyone because it’s a good thing to do that and to have that image for children. And, you know, all of my friends have children now and you really see how, I don’t know, how much the environment around them, even publicity or advertising and television, how it sort of shapes them and creates this little world for them and you want to make sure that they shouldn’t be afraid of that.”
How is this role different from the ones you have played beforeIJ
I’ve played very strong women doing martial arts or sword fighting or tearing people down verbally, but this is someone who is actually someone that I can relate to because I relate to my friends and I relate to other women out there and, you know, there will be other roles that I can, you know, play those characters and this one is just a very sort of in some ways a quieter character because she stands out just by being, you know, a regular person who is going through everyday struggles. And I think that’s what’s special about this and I think Rob Doherty has really captured that in how he has tried to give her those qualities in her interactions with Sherlock. So I feel very lucky.
What do you love about directing the showIJ
What I love about directing is that I get to interact with all the departments. I get to actually talk to them creatively about what they like and I can add my thoughts and opinions. You kind of get a little head start on the scripts before it starts. And it changes of course, but you actually get to talk to the actors in a different way and interact with them in a way that you kind of wanted to, you know, when you’re doing other, you know, sort of none of your business when you’re doing other scripts and you’re doing other scenes. But it’s an immersion, it’s a full immersion directing and I get so much out of it and I feel like I get to wear all the different hats that I’ve always wanted to try wearing.
