There are some movies that one needs to watch not because they will make it to the Rs100 crore club and, thereby, be deemed to be a hit at the box office but for their sheer brilliance. lootera is one such film from Vikramaditya Motwane. loosely based on O’Henry’s The last leaf, the movie glides effortlessly from one frame to another. The 70 mm screen that the director has used to tell his story is a combination of many things — it is a love story, there is chor-police drama that is played out, there are beautiful locales, it has art, a bit of history and old Hindi songs being played on the radio.

All this and more combined with some great performance from all the characters ensures that lootera casts its spell and leaves the audience enthralled.

The supporting star cast adds to the acting by the lead pair. Bengali actor Barun Chanda’s role, who plays the zamindar, has been well thought out. As the doting father and a man who refuses to believe that all his possessions will be taken away by Independent India under the land acquisition is played our rather well. Other characters — Vikrant Massey, Adil Hussain, Divya Dutta and Arif Zakaria do their bit.

But the film belongs to the leads — Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha. It is a tad difficult to believe that Sonakshi and Ranveer who have essentially acted in out right commercial cinema are capable of even acting let alone give such an impressive performance.

Despite the fact that the film is extremely slow, the brilliant cinematography — be it the rural setting in Bengal or the snow covered landscape in Dalhousie, fantastic background music and great direction makes this one a must watch till the very last leaf.
