Amit Tandon, who plays the lead in Dil Deke Dekho on SAB, talks to ANCHAl SHARMA about his character and what love means to him
What is this show all aboutIJ
It is a love story of Kamal Chopra (Amit Tandon) and Simran Shastri (Preet Kaur). The show highlights three love stories which span three generations. It focuses on the struggle that each generation faces while trying to express love.
Tell us about your characterIJ
He is a typical Punjabi boy — an eligible bachelor of the Chopra family. He is in search of his childhood love, who had kissed him on his cheeks when they were kids and didn’t know what it meant. He has been trying to find the essence of that kiss in every girl for the past 30 years.
Any challenges.
Except with such wonderful performers and our aim at making a very natural romantic comedy, everyone needs to be spontaneous and energetic.
What things you keep in a mind when you selected this roleIJ
For me depth of the character is very important. Kamal has so many different levels to him as a person and is very eccentric in nature. So it’s a perfect role for me to do.
Tell us about your journey in the industryIJ
I started out as a participant on the reality show — Coke V Pop Stars in 2003. I didn’t win but Channel V took me on as a host. Then, when I was part of Indian Idol I thought that would put me in the forefront. But the audience only remembered me as a good-looking man with muscles and tattoo. Television is heavily dependent on roles, it’s not the greatest medium to showcase acting. I started off with doing cameos which ended up being extended. My advantage is, I have already established myself on television. Now I want my singing to get recognised and appreciated. I hope when I release it, people will like it.
What are your future plansIJ
I am planning a mash up of a popular English song and something in Punjabi folk as well. I will also begin releasing my original track soon. I am excited about it.
What is your definition of loveIJ
love is an emotion which encompasses caring, understanding and respect. When you have this, you have love or else you have nothing.
