Veteran actress SUPRIYA PIlGAONKAR who plays a single parent in Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi, talks to SANGEETA YADAV about portraying a possessive mother, the trend of web series and shows that glue her to the seat
What made you say yes to play Ishwari in Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise BhiIJ
Ishwari is positive and has different layers which I’ve never played before. It’s a tricky journey of a single parent who is over possessive about son. Things start changing in the mother-son relationship after he falls for a girl. This show deals with how a mother overcomes insecurities.
Do you relate to the characterIJ
Ishwari loves her children selflessly and she is extremely caring. I am also a devoted mother like her in real life. I am not as positive as she is. As she starts getting insecure, she herself is taken aback with this feeling. What I can not relate to is the possessiveness about the children.
It is very rare to have shows portraying mother in a positive frame of mind...
That is because the character is too subtle. Nowadays, there is hardly any show which portrays the character in a subtle way. Either they are too loud or too regressive.
Is it a challenge to bring out so many shades in a characterIJ
Mostly, I am not convinced by my performance but people say I am good actor. We are puppets in the hands of the scriptwriter and director. I try to understand what the creator wants to show. If her take is different from mine, I will not say that I will not do it. I follow the director but lend my conviction to it. That’s very challenging. The trick is to listen to everyone and then enact convincingly.
Do you improvise on spotIJ
To make the character look believable, I make changes in dialogues but only after the director agrees. I portray negativity in a way that is relatable. My only concern is whatever the scene is, it should look relatable.
What shows do you like on TVIJ
Siya Ke Ram, Devlok With Devdutt Pattanaik and Suryaputra Karna are shows that I watch again and again not because of cinematography but for the screenplay which is very research oriented. These shows have good content and are entertaining too. Saurabh Tiwary’s Mahabharat is so beautifully narrated. I still watch the show on Hotstar.
Many actors say that they have stopped watching TV...
That’s because there is too much of quantity but less quality. Sometimes I watch TV shows to make myself realise that I don’t have to do anything like that. I’ll not name the shows but there are some weird stories that are going on which make no sense.
Web finite series and online streaming are a rage...
I want to explore the web series platform someday. I recently watched Permanent Roommates, House of Cards and Zindagi channel’s shows and I really liked them. I’m happy that I have done series like that long back likeKshitij Ye Nahin. People still remember it. For me, that is the real achievement.
Did you ever feel that if you’ll not do shows, you’ll go out of the limelightIJ
I want to work not to be in the limelight but for the love of my audience. If they keep loving me and want to see me, I’ll never stop working. When I see veteran actors coming to the set and performing one scene, I think one day I will also come like this and perform cameos. Actors like Gangubai Hangalsahib used to do that. I’ll take up shows which match my sensibilities and are progressive.
Any show that you refusedIJ
I have already done such show in the past and it didn’t make any difference to me. Basera was one of them. It had Ram Kapoor, Pallavi Subhash and many other actors and this show was supposed to be like Baghban.
