OK JAANU

Cast: Naseeruddin Shah, leela Samson, Aditya Roy Kapur, Shraddha Kapoor

Rated: 6/10

Here is some good news for all those who didn’t know what to do over the weekend. The lull that was there after the release of Dangal is finally over. From ehre on, one can look forward to the likes of Kaabil, Raees, etc. Ok Jaanu may not be the kind of movie that many would like to see, it does try to showcase modern relationships which the younger generation will identify with.

lately, Bollywood has been experimenting when modern-day relationships — Ki & Ka being a case in point. These have been appreciated not for the fact that they are great movies but the fact that they do make sense to Gen Z and are much more in sync with how they think and feel — that they are more realistic as comapred to a soppy love story.

One can put Ok Jaanu in this category. But it is a film and one can interpret it anywhich way one likes. One way to see it that the young couple are in love with each other — just don’t know it yet — and therefore take this step much to the horror of Naseeruddin Shah.

Yes, he is very much part of this film that is about young love. It also has leela Samson who plays his wife with Alzheimer’s. Any movie that has Shah means that he will draw a lot of attention. We all are aware of the whys. His performance comes in so naturally that it is difficult to imagine that he is acting. His dialogue deliver, his expressions, the way he walks are all so brilliantly played out.

But Ok Jaanu, which is a remake of Ok Kanmani from Kollywood is about young people. Probably, this is where director Shaad Ali has gone a little off track. He could well have exploited the chemistry that the older couple have. Then there is the remix of Humma humma AR Rahman’s superhit song from Mani Ratnam’s 1995 Tamil blockbuster Bombay. While the younger generation has loved this remix, it is nowhere near to the sizzle that the original had created featuring Sonali Bendre.

Go see this one since it does manage to leave one with a warm fuzzy feeling at the end of it.
