Whenever one talks about Bollywood, he will have to refer to it as before Kochadaiiyan (BK) or after Kochadaiiyan (AK). The film is going to set very high standards,” superstar Amitabh Bachchan had declared in an award ceremony in the Capital. If and when you watch this animated film, you will realise what Big B meant. The canvass is huge, the concept is novel, the way of filming is perfectly brilliant and the musical score is way over average — Kochadaiiyan is a winner all through.
As a tribute to her father, debutante Soundarya Rajinikanth Ashwin wanted to embark on something new and something so big that it becomes a game changer in Bollywood. With the latest motion capture technology (this is the first full fledged Hindi feature film) Soundarya has done a commendable job.
A story that ultimately talks about the triumph of good over evil, set in a periodic backdrop is a complete package in itself. Add Rajnikanth, Deepika Padukone and Jackie Shroff and you have a certain crowd puller.
There is a lot of song and dance happening in the midst of plotting and scheming, but one really doesn’t mind the disturbance as long as one sees Rajni sir break into his signature steps. Although Kochadaiiyan has all the ingredients of a masala blockbuster, it may take sometime for people to get used to the motion capture technology that has been put to good use by the director. Some, may even feel that superstar Rajnikanth is wasted in an effort like this.
But for many others, it is high time that our newage directors marry technology with concepts. As for acting, there is not much that one can say because this has been achieved through line drawing and camera capture, but the animated figures do well to emote like real stars on the screen.
Fans of Deepika Padukone, they may feel her animated character was slightly ugly and out of place in this whole film but her swift movements and soothing voice will put all critics to rest.
Watch this for a different kind of cinematic experience.
