BADlAPUR

Staring: Varun Dhawan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Yami Gautam, Vinay Pathak, Divya Dutta

Rated: 6/10

There are few things that need to be clarified here. First, is not your average revenge film. Second, it doesn’t have the usual song and dance — there is no item number that will make the masses rush to the theatres to buy tickets. But it is perhaps one movie that one should not miss.

Director Sriram Raghavan needs to be commended on his efforts for bringing to life a story that is not only intense from the word go but also gripping that keeps one on the edge. Considering that one knows the plot and yet it keeps your interest so much so that you don’t want to miss even a second of it — not even take a loo break — says a lot of the manner in which it has been treated and played out on the 70 mm screen.

Though the storyline is simple, it is the journey that it takes you on — filled with fury through the protagonist Raghu played by Varun Dhawan, that makes this one a dark film which questions whether one should take the law in one’s hands to seek justice— a father who is hell bent on looking for the man who is responsible for the senseless death of his son and wife but unable to decide where to start.

It is heart-wrenching to see the lifeless tiny hand on the steel tray in the mortuary or the mother’s last words wanting to know about her son. And in the midst of it, the father, Raghu played brilliantly by Dhawan. One would have to give credit to this actor who has three movies to his name to give such an awesome performance. Of course, we all know that Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a great actor.

Playing liak, a criminal with a slippery yet laid-back attitude, he delivers a powerful performance. Despite being the villain, the way he portrays himself makes one like him one minute and loathe him the next. As for the women, Huma Qureshi who plays liak’s love interest is good as is Yami Gautam who is Dhawan’s wife even though she doesn’t have much of a role.

Over all, Badlapur is a beautifully made movie and makes for a must watch
