'I love the grey in my character'

Sumona Chakravarti who has captured heartbeats as Bittu Sharma’s wife in Comedy Nights With Kapil feels that with her entry in Jamai Raja as Misha, a lot of twists and turns have made the storyline exciting. Srishti Dutta talks to the leading lady who tells her why she had vanished from the soap genre & her upcoming plans
  • Your entry in Jamai Raja as Misha has created a lot of tumult in Siddharth (Ravi Dubey) and Roshni (Nia Sharma)’s life. How is the plot unfoldingIJ
Misha is Siddharth’s childhood friend. She is this lively, vibrant girl who is very different from the rest of the characters. She wants Siddharth and Roshni to get separated forever, so that she can have a happy married life with him. She is creating a lot of conspiracy to make sure that they both stay away and hate each other to the core.

  • You have been away from daily soaps for quite some time. What intrigued you to choose a role like Misha’s for your comebackIJ
I never went away anywhere. After Bade Achhe lagte Hain, I kept doing comedy and episodes. It’s just that after doing a serial for three and a half years, I wished to take a break from daily soaps and waste my money. When a character like Misha was offered to me, I gladly took it up because I liked it. Also, Jamai Raja is an existing popular show, so I thought, why notIJ!

  • Can we expect to see you in daily soaps more oftenIJ
I am always an actor first, over a stand-up comedian. Having said that, I am open to all, be it a comedy show, a film or a daily soap.
  • You were shooting recently for a movie alongside Jennifer Winget and Kunal Kohli. How that is shaping upIJ
I have seen parts of the movie and I think it’s come up really good. I look good in it! I feel this movie will be a sort of a makeover for the industry.
  • You are well known as Bittu Sharma’s wife in Comedy Nights With Kapil. Has it ever happened that people have come up to you and treated you as his wifeIJ
Yes, that has happened lots of times! In fact, whenever you play any character onscreen and people appreciate it, they tend to identify you with your character. Your character becomes your identity! But that’s okay, it’s part and parcel of a TV actor’s life!
  • You have acted alongside Aamir Khan in Mann movie as a child. Has it always been your dream to be an actorIJ
Yes, kind of. Most people usually have a plan A and B regarding their careers. But I don’t remember wishing to be anything else other than an actor. I never had a plan B!
  • What do you consider as the turning point in your careerIJ
Turning point would definitely be Bade Achhe lagte Hain (BAlH). Before that, I had been working for many years but it was BAlH that catapulted me to overnight fame. It gave me my due. I became a popular household name.
  • You had said in an interview that you don’t like repeating your work. So what kind of projects do you have in store for the near futureIJ
I don’t really know what tomorrow holds. But yes, it has always been my endeavor to do roles that are not similar because we have one life, so why be stuck with the same kind of roles.
