&TV has come up with a ghost story which breaks the notion that ghosts are to be feared.
A royal family celebrates the death of a tyrant elder Bakula Bua, not knowing that her spirit is back in the house after convincing Gods that her family needed her.
So persistent is she that even Gods want to get rid of her and send her back to Earth as a ghost.
Bakula used to be a dominating, aggressive, stubborn and intelligent woman handling all the household affairs with an iron fist. She was feared and detested by all family members, so much so that the family wished she was dead.
On seeing her death being celebrated by one and all, Bakula turns into a disgruntled ghost wanting to take revenge.
The result is a comedy which breaks the perception of a usual ghost.
This one is all set to take revenge but realises she is the cause of all the miseries of her family. She tries to turn saviour and fix the dysfunctional unit. The show uses the genre of fantasy to signal a social change, teaching people to be kind.
The high point of the show is that it brings together veteran Gujarati actors Sarita Joshi as Bakula Bua and Aparna Mehta as her sister-in-law Rekha.
“We chose Sarita Joshi to play Bakula Bua as she has a face which is both stern and soft at the same time. So, she can be tender and mischievious. She can depict a lot of emotions simultaneously. As for Aparna, we wanted to get her out of the saas mode. Besides, they are both from Gujarati theatre and will enhance the characters,” says script-writer and producer Aatish Kapadia The show also sports the message that destiny has a plan for everyone and no one can escape it.
The show is different because it tries to break superstitious beliefs through a ghost and tells the audience how the general perception around spirits is totally erroneous.
“Why can’t a ghost just be another person and why should it be scary was what I wanted to depict in the show,’’ says Kapadia.
“I was wanting to portray an exciting character on screen for a long time. When I read the script, it interested me and agreed to play Bakula. I’m thrilled to be a part this project as the concept of the show is different. It’s exciting to be playing the role of a ghost for the first time on television. I love experimenting with newer roles and I’m sure Bakula Bua Ka Bhoot will connect with the audience.’’ Joshi says.
The show, produced by JD Majethia and Aatish Kapadia, will go on air from June 24, every Saturday-Sunday at 8 pm.
