love, sex, betrayal, relationships, money, power and compromises are somethings which we associate the elite class with. It is a world that is cast under a shadow — be it the film or the fashion industry — each has its own deep dark secrets.
Usually, movies made on this theme is something that Madhur Bhandarkar is associated with. This time it is by National Award winning director Onir, who has a history of making films related to lGBT. In Shab, Onir has tried to bring out the complexes in a modern-day relationship and the dark side of the fashion industry. The film traces the life of Mohan who comes from a small town of Uttrakhand to become a model. But then he finds out the dark secrets of the industry and instead of becoming a bait, he tries everything to survive where he meets some good people who support him.
Onir’s art of film making can be traced in each and every frame which he has shot to perfection, by logistically playing with the emotions and balancing relationship, the film never loses its connect from beginning to last and keeps the audience wondering about the next step
Raveena Tandon plays the role of a rich and lonely trophy wife who seduces Mohan into a never ending trap. It is one of the most sensual and brilliant performances that Tandon has delivered till date breaking boundaries as far as her image is concerned.
Though it took Onir 17 years to bring it to the 70 mm screen, the movie does have shades of Fashion and Citylights.
But on the whole, the film does complete justice in bringing out the flaws of our rich aristocratic society and does compel to think, is the stardom really worth itIJ
