CGI that enthralls

San Andreas

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Carla Gugino,  Alexandra Daddario

Rated: 6/10

Here, besides Dwayne Johnson, the other only big wow factor is the CGI. Of course, it is difficult to miss Johnson’s towering presence in San Andreas. From flying a helicopter into a tight space and rescuing a girl whose car spins and goes off the road and gets wedged between two rocks at a steep mountain incline, Johnson does all this and much more with an ease that is befitting him.

Considering that we have just felt the after effects of the earthquake that devastated Nepal last month, San Andreas is a movie that really has a scare quotient. Moreso because the possibility of a quake measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale is a possibility — it happened in Chile in 1960. The chaos was compounded with foreshocks, aftershocks and even a tsunami.

So, what we see in the film is not something that is far-fetched or even improbable. Amidst all the brilliant CGI and a great starcast, the movie falls short when it comes to a rather simplistic storyline. But the movie has some poignant moments. like an elderly couple who hug each other saying goodbye. Director Brad Peyton has ensured that there is plenty of melodrama and great visuals that will keep one enthralled all through.

Of course, here’s a spoiler, it is not about if ‘The Rock’ will be able to save his daughter, it is about when.
