Anirudh Dave, who plays Y.A.R.O in Y.A.R.O Ka Tashan on SAB TV, talks to SHAlINI SAKSENA about his passion lies, his love for work with Rakesh Bedi and what makes his character so lovable

What does Y.A.R.O stand forIJ

Those who have been watching the show would know that YARO is a humanoid. So the words stand for Young Assembled Robotic Object.

What do to like about this character you are playingIJ

He is very innocent and genuine. This is because his maker Govardhan Agarwal, played by Rakesh Bedi, has made him and ensures that usmein koi chhal aur kapat nahin hai. I think every human being should be like YARO. It will make the world a better place to live in.

Were there any apprehensions in doing the show since playing a robot has not been attempted beforeIJ

I have always got roles where I have had to use my acting skills. I have been lucky in that sense that I get to play characters where I get to do different things. This show has given me an opportunity to use my craft as an actor, I am very lucky that I am a part of this serial.

Do you have checklist when it comes to choosing a roleIJ

Not really. For an actor, it is important that he keeps getting roles where he can prove his skills as an actor. Of course, the script, the content, the concept of the show, etc matter but what is more important is how meaty the role is. It doesn’t matter if the character is negative, or has a grey shade or whether it is a sci-fi or for that matter a robotic character.

Is there a genre that you preferIJ

Once again, what is important for an actor is that he gives his best when it comes to doing a show. Doing different roles brings out his potential and people also get to see what he is capable of as far as the craft is concerned and the range that he is able to play.

You have done plays and theatre. Where does your passion lieIJ

Theatre is my passion. As you are aware even Rakesh Bediji is part of the show. It is great to be working with him. He is a person who has done theatre and films and made a place for himself in both. When we are not shooting, we have long conversations and talk about both. I get to learn many things.

Why is theatre not so popularIJ

There are some places where people will not mind spending Rs1000 to buy a ticket and watch a play. But there are some places where people don’t go see a movie during weekends because the ticket is for Rs400- Rs500. You can’t expect these kinds of people to go see a play. But there are many who would prefer to go and see a play rather than go see a movie because theatre gives you a different experience altogether.  You are right there and the actor is on stage performing, it is different from watching a film on the screen. As far as films are concerned, there is always DVDs or one can download it. But you can’t do this with plays; to see them you have to go see them live.

What are the challenges theatre faces todayIJ

This is probably a wrong question for me to answer. But to try and give you some perspective, it depends who is performing. There are some veteran theatre artists like Anupam Kher who have done very well for themselves, they go abroad as well. These are the kind of people who have been performing for 25 o 35 years and have established themselves. But there are many who have just entered the field. They only manage to do a couple of stage shows and shut shop because of lack of sponsors or are unable to get a proper place to showcase their play. But in the last few years, people have started showing interest in watching plays again. So theatre is reviving again.

If you had to choose a medium like theatre, serials or films what would it beIJ

For an actor what matters is that he gets work. The stage doesn’t matter.

Would you repeat a character that you have already playedIJ

There is no such thing that an actor gets typecast. As long as the concept and the script is good, it wouldn’t make a different what character one is playing.
