This one is not quite the superhero regular film to which children will go and enjoy all the action. It is more introspective, implosive and strife within the family kind of a thing. That, however, does not make it deathly, dull and boring. Yes, it talks more, thinks more and is kind of morose in bits but still these are superheroes on an emotional rollercoaster, testing friends and friendships, questioning motifs within the family, splitting to fight issues from either end but fighting nonetheless a common but wily villain cashing in on the human frailties of men and women not known to have any.
Split into two warring groups, headed by Iron Man on one side and a righteous Captain America on the other, the superheroes come into a clash with each other over giving up their right to strike, to the United Nations authority. This means, every time there would be a crisis in any part of the world, the superheroes would have to take the UN’s sanction before swinging into any kind of rescue operation.
Captain America feels that this is restricting and hence incorrect, so he refuses to sign. But Iron Man, ridden with guilt over the killing of some innocent people in a recent raid by the superheroes in remote Nigeria, feels this is a correct thing to do. Taking currency out of this Civil War between the superheroes, the super villain, an aggrieved Zemo, sets his revenge plan into action simply put, a plot to press the self destruct button of trust between the superheroes who would eventually kill each other. Thereby, he would avenge the killing of his folk in one of the raids by the super heroes.
The film is slow moving but arresting, a different mould in which the action heroes set in quite another type of roller-coaster wherein the overriding emotion of guilt shapes all the action. And by the way, there’s is an arresting splash by a callow-in-comparison Spiderman too, a child who is on the side of Iron Man.
