Coffee with D
Cast: Sunil Grover, Zakir Hussain, Dipannita Sharma, Anjana Sukhani, Rajesh Sharma
Rated: 5/10
To make a satire on the dreaded don Dawood is definitely a brave effort. The fact that it has as the lead protagonist — Sunil Grover — to play Arnab not Goswami but Ghosh — should have had the viewers laughing out loud. Does it manage to bring a smileIJ Well, not even a smirk. That is the downfall of Coffee With D.
Director Vishal Mishra had said that his intention was to make a film ‘jo banti nahin’. His intentions should be lauded. But unfortunately there is nothing here that can be termed as unique, ya jo kabhi bani nahin. Now we know why such films are not made let alone attempted.
Is it interestingIJ May be in parts in terms of dialogue delivery.
Then there is the spoof on ArGo himself. The only time we see Sunil Grover aka Dr Mashoor Gulati anywhere near the high-spirited behaviour that ArGo is infamous for is in the first 10 minutes of the movie. The rest of the time is spent building the interview with D.
That too fails to impress since D is shown as the master manipulator and Arnab — Sunil Grover — trying to play a hardcore crime journalist who had taken an oath — to bring to the people the truth and nothing but the truth.
The rest of the starcast ambles along with saving grace from Zakir Hussain who plays D. The disappointment, of course, is Sunil Grover. We were hoping for some really funny antics from the man who had endeared himself as Gutthi and now as Rinku Devi and Dr Gulati. That is where the problem lies. There is no way that the audience will see him as anything but the character he plays on the small screen. It is what has made him so popular among the masses. When he fails to deliver on that score or when the director fails to make brownie points on this, the movie is bound to be a big letdown.
