katti batti

Cast : Kangana Ranaut, Imran Khan

Rated: 5/10

This was supposed to be a romantic comedy. But sadly, it is neither romantic and there is definitely no fun quotient. Even if one tried to look hard for one-liners or fun situations that will put a smile on your face, one will come up short. So, Nikhil Advani, the director, started off on the wrong foot to begin with. This means that the film could only go downhill from here on.

Maybe Advani wanted to make a love story and add some sob elements to it. But this is Bollywood and the viewers hate to see a love story where one will come out crying. It is like watching a Salman Khan movie where he dies — imagine the horror of it. It is not as if one can make a movie on the lines of Sweet November or Fault In Our Stars where one needs a handkerchief from the word go. If the director was wanting to make an Indian version by combining the two Hollywood films, he has failed miserably on many scores.

First, the film starts off as a love story and takes a turn about relationships or so it wants you to think. But then, towards the end of the movie, one gets to know that it is something entirely different.

Second, Imran Khan tries too hard to look mature but seven years down the line, he still has to loose that chocolate boy charm. As Maadhav aka Maddy the role sits rather uncomfortably on his shoulders. He should actually stick to doing roles like the one he did in I Hate luv Storys and Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. Not because he can’t act —probably he can — he has to just wait and be patient for the right script and director; but because there are some actors who are just unable to emote. It is here that Imran Khan fails. He has one set expression — when is a happy, when he is crying or when is he angry.

It is here that Kangana Ranaut takes over. After doing films like Queen and Tanu Weds Man Returns, she has proved that when it comes to acting she is a natural. But In Katti Batti she is a mismatch with Imran Khan. She looks a tad older to him and there is hardly any chemistry between the two.

Third, the overly stretched last 15 minutes of the movie was really not required. Mr Advani we got what you wanted to say at the point from where you decided that the audience needed to cry, for some strange reason. If that was the aim, why not make it a sad love story from the very startIJ There have been some great Bollywood movies of this kind. So one has to sit through 134 minutes of a movie which could have ended in 119.

For those who are wondering what the word katti batti means — Katti means to fight and Batti means that the fight is over. As the title suggests — and here is a spoiler — our lead pair first fight and then makes up.

On the whole, the film fails to impress.
