Notably, Naxal rebels are active in 18 of the 24 districts of Jharkhand and nearly 4,000 people have been killed in Naxal-related violence in the past years. Maoist insurgency which is the greatest internal security threat puts the squeeze on the economic activity of the country too. Maoism, which started off as a people’s movement, has now become a nearly Rs 2,500 crore organised extortion business in the form of ‘levy’ in the different parts of the country, sources said.

According to a home ministry report Maoists and their commanders collect a whopping 950-1000 crores Rupees as levy money from different states of India each year and if the levy collection drive is increased as informed by the Naxalites the revenue collection drive might add another 100 crores from different states.
