Youth activists stage demonstration

A group of youth activists staged demonstration against the Kolhan University's vice-chancellor at Jamshedpur Women's College in Bistupur on Monday.

Under the banner Radical Youth and Students Helpline, a social organisation working for the welfare of students started agitation against RPP Singh, the vice-chancellor and protested against the removal of Sumita Mukherjee, principal of Jamshedpur Women's College without any prior information.

"We are here to protest against the move. The principal was honest and dedicated. There were financial irregularities when Shukla Mahanty (now the pro vice-chancellor) was the principal of the Jamshedpur Women's College. Through an audit last year it was found that there were financial irregularities worth Rs 30 crore. I think this must be the reason why the principal has been removed," said Archana Singh, the president of the Radical Youth and Students Helpline.

"We were happy with the administration of Mukherjee. When she was appointed about two years ago, she streamlined everything. When the audit report was sent to the university, they manipulated it and sent a positive report to the state HRD department. The VC must come here and explain the reasons about all the irregular activities," said an activist of the Radical Youth and Students Helpline.

The members said that would lock the gates of the college tomorrow if the university didn't respond to their protest.
