Youngsters making a beeline for pools to beat the heat

With steel city reeling under hot and sweltering temperature with maximum temperature shooting up to 42 degrees, swimming has become the coolest option in the city to stay fit and beat the heat.

The swimming pools in the city are abuzz with activities these days. Youths including school children have joined sessions on swimming being conducted at JRD Tata sports complex, United Club, Beldih Club and G Town Club.

The objective of the camp is to groom the students with a winning attitude to develop leadership quality and team work and improve the health fitness. They are being trained by qualified coaches of Sports Department.

‘I am happy to be a part of the camp. Honing skills in swimming is the best part time during vacations. Especially during the sweltering months of summer taking a splash in the pool is the best way to cool.

This is my fourth year of swimming and I am enjoying every moment of it,’ said Shruti Agiwal a student of Carmel Junior College and a member of United Club.

The swimming pool of G Town Club is brimming with swimming activities, as in the last week the strength of budding swimmers have increased following summer vacations declared in schools. Officials of the club informed that they are receiving frantic calls for admission.

‘The response has been immense this summer. We are helping the participants to learn nuances of freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke under the watchful eyes of the coaches,’ said an in-charge of United Club pool.

JRD Tata sports complex is also hosting a 20-day summer camp. It covers 12 sports disciplines — archery, athletics, basketball, boxing, handball, table tennis, volleyball, roller skating, badminton, cricket, golf and swimming. Moreover, yoga session is also being conducted for the parents of participating children.

‘We have received overwhelming response this year too. A total of 1550 children have registered for participating in the camp at JRD Sports Complex. We teach basic swimming and also use this as a talent hunt,’ said a coach at JRD Tata sports complex.
